What are Articles about Social Issues Doing on an Educational Website?

Some people read our articles about healthcare dysfunction and nuclear proliferation and wonder about the connection of these subjects with language arts and social studies. We are currently working on the state-mandated curriculum for kindergarten through grade 12. But we can’t help but notice that there is a big gap between the items on this curriculum and the things that we read about in the newspaper every day. It is our mission to close that gap. We should finish the standard curriculum very soon. In fact we already cover more material than 99% of students master in a traditional setting.

Children are capable of learning much more than we give them credit for. If you go through our kindergarten and first grade table of contents and flashcards you will see some rather advanced content. And yet even though we have over 17,000 users at the present time, we haven’t had a single question about course content. No one has asked us to help them with an algebra problem! Because if you go back and get the fundamentals, learning one factoid at a time, school work becomes child’s play. It is not uncommon for fifth-grade students to begin in kindergarten in order to get the basics. Sometimes they are a bit embarrassed at doing this but soon see the logic behind it and breeze through the content.

So, while we are looking for volunteers to help us complete the state-mandated program, when this is done, we fully intend to bridge the gap between social studies, language arts, mathematics, and science currently taught in schools today and the tough issues that face us in the realm of healthcare, crime, addictions, family dysfunction, and a whole host of other problems that many people have considered too complex to be included in a K-12 program.

I love Freeworldu.org. The content is easy to understand and digest. The cards on morals and values I do with my kids and the neighbors when they are here. I am happy to see more subjects popping up. It would be nice to see a course on practical organization tips or setting up your leaning environment only to help people new to learning on the internet. Or practical tips to help have a productive day with Freeworldu.org. Otherwise thanks for Freeworldu.org and this board on root causes. :)
